On Global Volunteer Day, the company provides each of its employees with a half-day of paid time to participate in a volunteer project. In 2009, nearly 3,200 employees at Life Technologies donated their time to more than 146 projects at 82 global sites during the company’s sixth annual Global Volunteer Day—the first since Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems came together to form Life Technologies.
Projects ranged from helping middle school students in East Palo Alto, California, to cleaning beach litter with the National Environment Agency in Singapore. While some employees were beautifying the grounds of The Science Factory in Eugene, Oregon, others were working in Cubbon Park to help attract visitors in Bangalore, India. The diverse tapestry of projects reflected the many personalities of Life Technologies, but was woven with a single thread: giving back.
Global Volunteer Day
Global Volunteer Day is the cornerstone of the Giving Back at Life program—a day when all Life employees and their families come together to volunteer for a full day of service to their local non-profit partners. |
Group Service Projects
Life Technologies employees regularly volunteer in conjunction with meetings and events for team building, from sorting food and painting non-profit offices to building bikes for underprivileged kids. Individual Efforts
In addition to group service projects on company time, the Giving Back at Life program encourages employees to take time to volunteer on their own and rewards them with incentives. In 2011, employees volunteered more than 42,000 hours for 824 different organizations. |
One Volunteer's Story
Rob Batchelor, an employee at our Eugene, OR site volunteer for Boy Scout Troop 182, has logged more than 1,800 hours on the Life Technologies volunteer system. When asked why he volunteers, he responded “ I volunteer for three main reasons: 1) to give back to the community, 2) to spend time with my family, and 3) because it's a lot of fun! As a Scoutmaster for my sons' Boy Scout Troop, I can help boys learn outdoor skills. Some of these boys have never even lit a fire, let alone gone camping. I also get a chance to spend quality time with my kids when none of us is glued to a computer or TV screen. Finally, I have a lot of fun going hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities.” |
Volunteer Drives
From collecting food and donating blood to holiday toy drives and gathering science equipment for classrooms, employees embrace the spirit of giving back all year long. |
Another Volunteer Story
Stacy Hall works in Headquarters of Life Technologies in Carlsbad, CA. As a volunteer, she has been planning blood drives for the past 2 years, including over 350 pints of blood which can save up to 700 lives. Why do you do blood drives? Here is her story and why she gives back in this special way: “As a child I was a blood donor recipient, and working at Life Technologies has given me the opportunity to give back." Everyone in their lifetime will know at least one person that has received blood, and your donation could be what saves a life. |
