Life Technologies Receives Prestigious “red dot” Award

Ion ProtonTM Sequencer Collects International Industrial Design Excellence Prize

CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 29, 2011 – -- Life Technologies Corporation today announced that the Ion Proton™ Sequencer received the “red dot award: product design 2012” for industrial design excellence in the life sciences category.

The red dot design award, which originated in 1955, is one of the largest and most celebrated global design competitions. In 2012, more than 1,800 manufacturers from 58 countries submitted 4,515 products for consideration.

The Ion Proton™ Sequencer has already received numerous accolades for innovation. In January 2012, PC Magazine called the instrument, “The Coolest Thing I Saw at CES” [Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA]; the Financial Times described the announcement of the Ion ProtonTM Sequencer as a “landmark development”; Forbes reported, “Today's Coolest New Gadget Is, In Fact, At CES”; and Fast Company Magazine cited the Ion ProtonTM Sequencer in naming Life Technologies number nine on its Most Innovative 50 Companies of 2012.

As DNA sequencing deciphers human, animal, and plant genomes, it promises to deliver personalized medical diagnoses, improved agricultural crop yields, and new sources of energy.  Sequencing the first human genome took 13 years and cost nearly $3 billion, but the field has progressed rapidly. In January 2012, Life Technologies announced that its Ion Proton™ System will deliver an entire human genome sequence in a single day for $1,000.

“We wanted the Ion Proton™ Sequencer to capture attention by delivering fast, affordable sequencing, as well as providing a simple and intuitive user experience” said Amanda Clardy, Chief Marketing Officer of Life Technologies. “The red dot award signifies our team’s success in once again being at the forefront of innovation.”

During development of the Ion ProtonTM Sequencer, Life Technologies partnered with RKS, a Los Angeles based strategic design consultancy, leveraging the firm’s expertise in delivering people focused solutions. Extensive research in the laboratory environment revealed that scientists valued refined and simple forms, ease of operation, and inspiration.

The design team enhanced the Ion ProtonTM Sequencer by making it simple to use and delivering an appropriate and aesthetically pleasing solution for the laboratory environment.  The form is compact, innovative, and simplified. The designers have elevated the user experience by delivering an iconic look and feel that compliments the device’s technical innovations.

In addition to delivering a world-class aesthetic and user experience, the Ion ProtonTM Sequencer is a scalable, simple and fast scientific instrument. The compact housing of the instrument provides optimal ventilation. Sequencing reagents are easily accessed through doors, and the process is initiated and monitored through a touch screen interface. LED indicators provide at-a-glance confirmation of operational status, and instruments can be rack-mounted, both increasing efficiency and maximizing use of space. The front panel is highly chemical and scratch resistant, and body textures and finishes were selected to utilize materials that are expected to become recyclable. Life Technologies has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index annually since 2008.

“We are very pleased with both the Ion ProtonTM Sequencer’s design and its recognition by such a distinguished international body,” said Clardy. “As a company, we are committed to achieving an intuitive and accessible design for our scientific instrumentation across a broad spectrum of research, medical, agricultural and other applied markets.”

An independent and international jury of 30 design experts evaluated all submissions on-site in Essen, Germany. For more information about red dot, please visit
