EHS Today magazine has named Life Technologies one of America’s Safest Companies for 2012. One of only eight recipients, this marks the first time the company has applied for and been included on this prestigious list.
Presented at the EHS Today America’s Safest Companies Conference in Chicago on September 11, this award recognizes Life Technologies’ safety excellence.
To be considered one of America's Safest Companies, EHS Today says an organization must demonstrate:
- support from management and employee involvement
- innovative solutions to safety challenges
- injury and illness rates lower than its industry average
- comprehensive training programs
- evidence that prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process
- good communication about the value of safety
- a way to substantiate the benefits of the safety process
The strength and success of Life Technologies’ program lie within its robust culture of safety innovation and continuous improvement. From a dedicated management team to active employee committees, safety is deeply ingrained throughout the company’s operations. This commitment has fostered countless positive changes that have delivered profound impacts on the company’s safety performance. For example, Life Technologies has reduced its recordable injury and illness rate by 76 percent from 2004-2011, far better than the industry average. Many of Life Technologies’ sites around the world have been recognized for achievements in the advancement of occupational health and safety by OSHA and other internationally recognized organizations.
In striving toward the ultimate goal of zero injuries, Life Technologies has implemented such innovations as safety rewards, townhall safety talks, stretching groups, safer product development, review of every recordable injury and serious near miss by the CEO, daily safety briefings on global operations calls, and interactive, online safety trainings. The company also utilizes its own Achievement Program to assess and drive progressive improvement in sites’ environmental health and safety (EHS) performance. Always looking for new ways to engage employees, EHS staff have even orchestrated a safety flash mob!
EHS Today has recognized America’s Safest Companies every year since 2002. Previous winners of this award vary considerably in terms of size and industry yet all share a passionate commitment to safety. By accepting this award, Life Technologies joins the ranks of previous winners including: GE, Honeywell, Frito-Lay, L’Oreal, Motorola, DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, Alcoa, Dow Chemical Company.
Life Technologies’ commitment to safety excellence extends beyond the workplace, encompassing employees, customers, and communities where the company operates. Continuously working to develop safer processes and products is one more way Life Technologies is making life even better.
