BODIPY® FL DyeBODIPY® FL dye is a bright, green-fluorescent dye with similar excitation and emission to fluorescein (FITC) or Alexa Fluor® 488 dye. It has a high extinction coefficient and fluorescence quantum yield and is relatively insensitive to solvent polarity and pH change. In contrast to the highly water soluble fluorophores Alexa Fluor® 488 dye and fluorescein (FITC), BODIPY® dyes have unique hydrophobic properties ideal for staining lipids, membranes, and other lipophilic compounds.

BODIPY® FL dye has a relatively long excited-state lifetime (typically 5 nanoseconds or longer), which is useful for fluorescence polarization–based assays and a large two-photon cross-section for multiphoton excitation.

We offer BODIPY® FL dye conjugated to a variety of antibodies, peptides, proteins, tracers, and amplification substrates optimized for cellular labeling and detection. In addition, reactive dye forms and protein labeling kits are available to allow you to generate your own protein conjugates or probes.

High-performance alternatives to BODIPY® FL

Alexa Fluor® 488 dye

Alexa Fluor® 488 dye is a bright, green-fluorescent dye with excitation and emission wavelengths similar to those of BODIPY® FL dye. For stable signal generation in imaging and flow cytometry, Alexa Fluor® 488 dye is pH-insensitive over a wide concentration range.

Probes with high fluorescence quantum yield and high photostability allow detection of low-abundance biological structures with great sensitivity. Alexa Fluor® 488 dye molecules can be attached to proteins at high molar ratios without significant self-quenching, enabling brighter conjugates and more sensitive detection.
