Long, non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) are strands 200 nt or greater that have function, but do not actually code for proteins. At one time, they were considered to be few and exotic, but there is growing evidence that they are numerous (perhaps more numerous than protein-coding RNAs) and may play a more general role in transcriptional regulation.
