The first step in protein analysis is sample separation. Protein gel electrophoresis is the most common technique used to separate proteins from cell and tissue extracts, blood or other biological sources.  Traditionally, protein gels had to be poured just prior to the electrophoretic run and the steps involved in their creation could be time-consuming and could also introduce artifacts in the experiment because of large variations in the gel composition.
