Essential 6™ Medium and Essential 8™ Medium
When used together, Essential 6™ Medium and Essential 8™ Medium streamline the generation, expansion, and differentiation of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) by offering a feeder-free, xeno-free system for all three steps.
Originally developed and published by Guokai Chen et al.1 in the laboratory of James Thomson, Essential 8™ Medium contains only the essential components needed for stem cell culture*. Essential 6™ Medium uses the same base formulation as Essential 8™ Medium, but without TGFβ or bFGF to allow for reprogramming and differentiation.

|Dr. Nirupama (Rupa) Shevde, customer training manager at Life Technologies, presents an overview of the Essential media system in our on-demand webinar, “Essential 8™ and Essential 6™—a feeder-free, xeno-free system for reprogramming and culture of pluripotent stem cells.
Essential 8™ Medium and Vitronectin (VTN-N) is the only xeno-free induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culture system to utilize the original formulation developed by Dr. Guokai Chen et al. in the laboratory of Dr. James Thomson.
“My experience with the Essential 6™ Medium is very positive, iPS colonies are bigger with more defined colony borders comparing to our standard induction“ Timo Otonkoski, Biomedicum Stem Cell Center (BSCC), Finland
