“Have you ever lost someone you love and wanted one more conversation, one more chance to make up for the time when you thought they would be here forever?" ― Mitch Albom
Hi. My name is Ambika Sundaresan. I work as a Bioinformatics Scientist for the Ion Torrent division in Carlsbad. I’m originally from Chennai, in Southern India. After finishing high school in India, I attended undergraduate and graduate schools at University of Wisconsin and UCSD and have lived and worked in San Diego ever since. In addition to English I speak Tamil and Hindi. I do Ashtanga yoga 2-3 times a week and try to meditate at least 10 minutes everyday. My favorite movie is “Pulp Fiction” and a book I’m currently enjoying reading is “Ask and it is Given” by Esther Hicks.
So, why am I riding? I actually stumbled upon the opportunity to ride as a part of the team a few months ago during a summer happy hour. I was a new employee at Life Technologies and thought it would be great way to make friends outside my immediate group and get to know the culture. The other reason of course is to do my part in furthering cancer research right here in San Diego. I am participating in this event in memory of my dad, K.R. Sundaresan, who raised my sister and myself essentially on his own after my mom passed away when I was four. My dad lost his battle with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2001. Wow, has it really been that long! Ever since, anytime I read about a new clinical trial or FDA approved drug for cancer treatment, the whatifs never fail to cross my mind. Wouldn’t it be great if cancer could become a chronic and manageable disease in the near future?
Being part of the Life Technologies Pedal the Cause team has been an incredible experience. The thought of raising $2000 was daunting at first. But that was the easy part thanks to the generosity of family, friends and colleagues past and present. The harder part was being committed to the training. The good news is that thanks to it, not only have I gotten into great shape, I have literally climbed hills I never thought I would, made new biker friends both within and outside Life Technologies, and also have the confidence to tackle new challenges and push my limits. Thanks Life Technologies and Pedal the Cause!
