rat neuron
GIBCO® Primary Rat Cortex and Hippocampus Neurons are isolated from day-18 Fisher 344 rat embryos and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen.  Invitrogen™ offers neuroscience researchers a flexible, ready-to-use, high quality alternative to freshly isolated neurons.

Primary Rat Hippocampus neurons (left):  Immunoflorescence detection of primary neuronal cells stained with mouse anti-MAP2 antibody (green, Cat. No. 13-1500) and singular presence of astrocyte as detected by rabbit anti-GFAP marker (Red, Cat. No. 08-0063).  Nuclei are stained with DAPI (blue).

Product information

These products are developed through vigorous internal research to afford comparable properties, such as viability, purity, and cell function, but minimize the inherent lot-to-lot variability with cells that are acutely isolated.  Unlike the other commercially available primary rat neurons that generally yield about 30% or lower post-thaw viability, Invitrogen neuron cells consistently give post-thaw viability in the range of 50-80% and cells grown in Neurobasal + B-27 media show minimum or absence of glial cell growth.

Long term viability of neurons using the LIVE/DEAD Viability/Cytotoxicity assay

1 Day

Rat cortical neurons cultured in Neurobasal™ medium (Cat. No. 21103-049) supplemented with B-27 (Cat. No. 17504-044) and GlutaMAX-I (Cat. No. 810-1048).  Live cells are stained with Calcein-AM (green) and dead cells are stained with EthD-1 (red); (LIVE/DEAD Viability/Cytotoxicity Kit for mammalian cells, Cat. No. L3224).
