The 5500 Series Genetic Analyzers ICS user interface was designed to incorporate user feedback and guide the user throughout the sequencing process—from sample setup to run monitoring and reviewing run results. ICS is also the data processing engine that performs real-time data analysis and generates sequences and associated quality values.

Easy Run Setup and Monitoring

Run setup is performed through a simple software wizard, which guides the user through each step. Users can also import run files or use available sequencing templates to quickly create sample run configurations. Setup is made easy by simply dragging samples onto a given lane of the FlowChip. (Figure 1).

The software provides assurance by letting users know at a glance how the run is doing. The timeline view allows the user to check the expected time the run will complete, the number of instrument pauses occurring throughout the run, and the overall quality of each of the samples on the FlowChip(s) (Figure 2).

Empowering User Decisions

5500 Series Genetic Analyzers ICS provides sample bead quantity assessment, real-time data analysis, and sequencing quality assessment by using sequencing controls embedded in each sample lane in the FlowChip. It provides a sample quality report and real-time sequencing performance feedback with run reports.

The software empowers users to make decisions at different stages of the run. With real-time sequencing performance feedback, the user can decide whether to continue the run, repeat a specific step, or abort the run. Aborting a run can be done at the lane level or the FlowChip level. All of these choices help users to save reagents and time (Figure 3).

The software provides feedback that the user can act upon. Thus, if the sample sequencing performance deviates from the control performance, the user can view the lane QC and decide whether to rerun a primer or abort the lane entirely.

Reagent Usage Tracking

Reagent setup is easy, because the user interface lists all the reagents required for a run and how they should be placed within the reagent tray. The instrument detects the reagent levels to check if sufficient reagent is available for the current run.

The software displays the reagent layout; the reagents highlighted in green indicate sufficient reagent levels for the intended sequencing run. Yellow indicates that the user will need to replace that reagent within the run. Finally, red indicates immediate reagent replacement is necessary (Figure 4).

Also, convenient preset pause points are set so the user knows when to come back to replace the reagents (Figure 5).
